What is PHI?
PHI or Protected Health
Information, also known as personal health information essentially refers to
the demographic data, medical history information, test & laboratory
results, insurance information, mental health conditions as well and other
information that healthcare firms/practitioners gather to identify individual
patient and determine the best care and treatment plan for treating them. As per
the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) 1996 healthcare
providers, business associates and insurers are limited to the type of
protected health information that they can gather from individual patients and
further share it with other companies or even use it for marketing purpose. Healthcare
organizations are also required to provide PHI to individual patients as and
when they request, preferably in the electronic format.
